One of NHI's major goals is to promote and facilitate the conservation of native species and habitats through the development and dissemination of data-rich and verifiable information, maps, and tools. The GIS Data section of our site is being created to help achieve this goal by getting NHI-produced and other publicly available GIS (geographic information system) data to other researchers and organizations. Whenever possible, we will try to arrange agreements with our project partners allowing NHI to distribute project data to the public via this web site. The NHI GIS data sets distributed here will emphasize vegetation, habitat, and fish/wildlife distributions.

The GIS Data section currently contains the following four geographically arranged subsections:

Columbia River Basin: Data sets cover entire basin,
Oregon: Data sets cover entire state,
Washington: Data sets cover entire state,
Willamette Valley: Data sets cover portions of basin.

Please visit the Interactive Biodiversity Information System (IBIS) for additional NHI GIS data downloads, queries by subbasins and counties, and detailed descriptions of wildlife-habitat classes!

Please note that downloading GIS data from the NHI web site requires FREE registration and login. NHI uses the free registration only to generate user activity statistics which help us to obtain funding. Your information will not be shared with other groups.

All GIS data sets on this site are Arc/Info^Ž coverages in Arc/Info^Ž Export Format unless otherwise noted. All export files have been compressed with the WinZip utility and can be extracted with WinZip, PKZip, or similar extraction programs.
